THE FINAL JOURNEY OF REV. FR. REMIGIUS SEQUEIRA

Shraddhanjali to Father Remigius Sequeira OFM Cap(1924-2015)
During the Eastertide as the Whole Church celebrates the Holy Pasch as the Easter People and chants Alleluia as Easter Response, Father Remigius commended his Soul to the All Merciful and Compassionate God on Divine Mercy Sunday. When he breathed his last He was 91 years of age, 67 years of Vita Consecrata in the Franciscan Capuchin Brotherhood, and 63 years of Priestly Service in the Vineyard of the Lord. In his death he can testify like St. Paul: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. (2 Timothy 4:7-8)

It was 43 years ago to be exact the new Province of KGM was carved out of the former Indian Province of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The three states of Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra were indicated as its geographical territory. Br. Remigius Sequeira was appointed as the first Provincial Minister of the new province with Br. Liguory Noronha as Provincial Vicar and the First Definitor. Brs. Pacificus Menezes, Irenaeus D'Souza andVincent Lobo were the second, third and fourth definitors respectively. The General Minister and his definitory also entrusted the Agra - Lucknow - Ranchi mission to the new province as a good number of its friars were working in the mission. On 17th May 1972, the new Provincial Minister and his definitory assumed charge and on that day the Province of Karnataka-Goa and Maharashtra officially came into existence. It had a strength of 100 friars. The first Chapter of the Province held at Monte de Guirim in 1973 decided to dedicate the Province to the Most HolyTrinity.

As Provincial Minister of the Province for three terms he was instrumental in all-round growth of Province Fraternity and Justice, Peace and Development of the People of God. He served the Capuchin communities in the States of Kerala and Tamilnadu, Goa and Karnataka as Formator, Novice Master, Rector, Professor the Dogmatic and Spiritual Theology, Spiritual Father to Friar Students and Novices. He was a Wise Sage of Biblical traditions – kindhearted, with mild manners, compassionate, with well-disposed understanding of others and gentle, in one word truly a Person of Virtue of high standards. In his death we have lost a great stalwart of our Province.

My Novice Master and Rector leaves for Heavenly abode

When i entered the Capuchin Order in 1979 Fr. Remigius was in Frangipet, Mangalore as a novice master. His very appearance was very fatherly. He went on to be my spiritual father, Novice Master, Philosophy Rector and then followed me all through the formation. He was my professor of Theology in Mysore. a great friar, teacher, formator and Leader. He was provincial for number of years. He has guided the destiny of KGM. We are grateful to him. Father Remigius we will miss you.

As we bid Adieu to Father Remigius, we all the members of the Holy Trinity Province, Karnataka, all the Friars of St. Anne’s Friary, Mangalore, all his family members – the relatives and the friends, and all those who assembled here to pay our respects to the departed Soul of Father Remigius wish you Eternal Rest and Beatific Vision of the Holy Trinity. May almighty God grant to every one the Divine Consolation. Amen.
